Entre a terra, o mar e o céu, este é um lugar da cultura mediterrânica, em pleno Atlântico. Num espaço de beleza sem limites, é também seguramente um local de grande sensibilidade paisagística e ambiental. Por isso, a nossa intervenção procura sobretudo manter a identidade cultural existente, integrando uma realidade que procura restabelecer a leitura volumétrica que o tempo apagou. Não se pretende assim impor o tempo estético de uma nova construção. Propomos que a fortaleza volte a ser habitada como no tempo do seu surgimento, ou seja, reinstalar a guarnição das casernas, sendo que estas, naturalmente, virão a ter as adequadas condições de conforto inerentes às necessidades deste novo equipamento. O espírito do lugar será, pois, mantido. Em termos de ética de intervenção, procurámos uma solução de equilíbrio entre o que terá sido no passado a sua existência e a exigência de um uso actual. Por isso, ocupamos o local original reerguendo, a partir das fundações, o mesmo volume de ocupação e uma nova e discreta expressão que colocará esta intervenção numa linha de pensamento contemporâneo face às convenções e recomendações internacionais para a reabilitação do património arquitectónico.

In the south of Portugal, this small Vauban fort was built in 1857 with the purpose of defending the Tavira village, from the continuous attacks from North African pirates. After a long period of inactivity, the fort was sold by the State to private buyers in the edge of the 19th century. The maintenance of such a built structure became complex and honourable so the decision to install a small ecological tourism accommodation unit was a solution to preserve the monument. A documental research on the foundation of the Fort and an archaeological investigation on the arms quad were conducted before the design started. The main goal was to recreate the spirit of the military compound from the original time of construction. Accordingly, the new volume of the bedrooms was erected in the soldier’s quarters original place, denying its instalment in the watch path, where the sea view was very appealing. The intention was to keep the way this fort was used in ancient times, and therefore, guests would be the "new military personnel", now facing the wonderful stone walls inside their own bedrooms. The ten rooms are located in a new building in the former soldier’s quarters place, other two are in the ground floor of the Governor’s residence, and finally two suites are installed in the old coach house and in the former gunpowder store. Overall, the Fort maintained its ancestral military image, the square of arms, the stone walls, and the relation with the sea shore and surrounding landscape, not revealing its new function.
